Field trials testing recycled phosphorus in organic agriculture
Ragn-Sells' innovation company EasyMining's recycled phosphorus product, RevoCaP, has during summer 2026, been tested under practical organic farming conditions at three field trial locations across Austria and Sweden. The trials are designed to assess the effects of RevoCaP addition on selected crops, with silage maize and potatoes being studied in Austria and potatoes in Sweden.

The initiative marks an important step in building knowledge about how recovered phosphorus can be returned to agriculture and contribute to more sustainable nutrient management. Throughout the growing season, researchers will assess crop development, yield, quality and soil health.
The trials follow a major regulatory breakthrough for recycled phosphorus. In June 2025, the European Commission approved recovered calcium phosphate for use as fertiliser in organic agriculture, opening the door for products such as RevoCaP to be used by organic farmers across Europe. The decision followed a positive recommendation from the EU's expert group on organic production and was welcomed as an important step towards closing the nutrient cycle and reducing Europe's dependence on imported phosphorus.
Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for food production, yet Europe remains largely dependent on imports from a small number of countries. Through its patented Ash2Phos technology, EasyMining recovers phosphorus from sewage sludge ash and transforms it into RevoCaP, a clean recycled phosphorus product. The process removes heavy metals and other contaminants while enabling more than 90 percent of the phosphorus in the ash to be recovered.

Trials at two organic farming sites
The Austrian field trials are taking place at two representative organic farming sites in northern Austria:
- Waidhofen an der Thaya, Lower Austria: potato trial
- Schlägl, Upper Austria: silage maize trial
Both locations feature low-pH soils but differ in soil type and climate, providing valuable insights into RevoCaP's performance under varying agronomic conditions. The Swedish field trial with potatoes is taking place in Dala Floda, where soil and climatic conditions are typical for the region, in collaboration with Potatiskonsult Åsa Rölin AB.
The experimental setup includes both replicated small-plot trials. Regular in-season assessments will be conducted to monitor crop development and document key performance indicators throughout the growing season.
If successful, the trials could provide important evidence for the use of recycled phosphorus products in organic farming and contribute to a better understanding of their fertilisation potential under practical farming conditions.
Advancing circular nutrient management
For Ragn-Sells, the trials represent another milestone in the journey from waste to resource.
